Ok, maybe I've missed the essay on this -- it seems like a fairly obvious problem -- and if so, maybe one of you can link me to the discussion. My questions concern the nature of Voldemort's first death slash second coming. Let's recap:

First, Lily dies for Harry, offering him magical protection.
Second, Voldemort AKs Harry, but the curse rebounds and his already damaged soul is once again split in two.
Third, one half of it latches onto Harry, making him a Horcrux and Voldemort is, for the moment, vanquished.
At this point in time he now has no body and six Horcruxes: Harry, the ring, the diadem, the cup, the locket, and the diary (the agreement being, I think, that he turned Nagini into a Horcrux after he was brought back in Harry's fourth year, yes?).
Right, I'm okay with all of this so far.

The part that bothers me is the whole bodiless-weak-spirit-floating-around-Albania-for-thirteen-years thing. Maybe I'm completely off the mark, but my assumption would have been that Voldemort died that night. That there was nothing left of his soul except for the piece that made itself cozy inside Harry and the various other pieces scattered across the country. That in order to bring him back the way Pettigrew did, Pettigrew would have had to sacrifice one of Voldemort's Horcruxes (assuming he knew where one was, which, I know, he didn't), leaving him with five more Horcruxes and one active piece of soul inside his regenerated body, rather than six Horcruxes and this extra random piece that somehow survived the Killing Curse even though his body didn't. I mean, that's not how AK works, right? It kills both the soul and the body, it doesn't detach the soul from the body and allow the soul to go floating about looking for snakes to possess. So how exactly was it that Voldemort survived the rebounded curse? Yes, I know his soul split and I know his body was destroyed and I know the one remaining part of his soul was so weak it was practically worthless until he got Quirrel to slaughter some Unicorns for him, but the point is that last part of his soul was still out there ... alive.

What gives, JKR?

Hey fellow [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers! I wanted to take a moment and introduce you to a new series we'll be putting on called Did You Know? Canon Folly Facts, and Fic-Worthy Fun. What this will be is a canon-based tidbit posted to [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers, oh, 3-5 times per week by me, [livejournal.com profile] slytherincesss, your resident canon h0r! Why? It's not unusual for a writer to forget small, but brilliant, canon details that would help enhance their Harry Potter-themed fics, and we want to encourage all you fantastic writers in our community to utilize Potter canon. We're hoping you'll enjoy this information and will also revisit some of the fantastic details that make Potterverse so truly special and magical. Including canon details can really bring authenticity to a fic. Even better, whacky hijiacks can ensue in abundance.

All entries will be from canon -- the seven Potter novels; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Quidditch Through the Ages; The Tales of Beedle the Bard; and Pottermore. You will never find me skulking about the Wikipedia or the HP Wikia looking for information. So, let's carry on with our first installment of Did You Know?

FIZZING WHIZZBEES

Fizzing Whizzbees (UK), or Fizzing Whizbees (US), are a special type of candy found in the wizarding world. Fizzing Whizzbees are a popular sweet sold at Honeyduke's in Hogsmeade; there is no mention of Fizzing Whizzbees being sold on the sweets trolley on the Hogwarts Express or in any other shop. Fizzing Whizzbees are a sherbet-like, ball-shaped candy that causes giddiness and levitation when eaten.

The active ingredient in Fizzing Whizzbees is Billywig stingers. A Billywig is a magical Australian insect with wings on its head and a stinger on its bottom. Muggles do not notice Billywigs; however, when stung, witches and wizards are quickly overcome by a sense of euphoria, well being, and giddiness. It is not unheard of for some witches and wizards to actually try and provoke a Billywig sting to feel its effects. Some witches and wizards are allergic to Billywigs and when stung may become stuck in a state of permanent levitation, which is really quite silly! Did you know?

Who binges on Fizzing Whizzbees? Draco or Harry?

What is the difference between a ghost and a ghoul in HP canon?

When I tried to look it up the description I found in general for ghouls (wikipedia) seemed unlikely that it was the same thing that JK Rowling meant when she described the creature that lives in the Weasley's attic.

It's also said that the ghoul's appearance was changed to look like Ron in DH?

Does anyone have anymore insight into this?

Thanks!

And it's about Quidditch.

So, scoring I get. But how it makes a difference to whether a team moves on or loses for good...not so much. Remember when Harry would say stuff like, "If Ravenclaw beats Hufflepuff by so many points and then Slytherin beats Ravenclaw by so many other points, then they'll move on to the final match." What does that MEAN? Why does it matter how many points each team wins by? If Slytherin beats Ravenclaw by ten points, is it not the same as if Slytherin beats Ravenclaw by ten hundred? Would Slytherin not move on either way? Maybe this is something that's obvious to a sport enthusiast, but that would not be me. >_> Halp?

(Can you tell I'm writing a fic about Quidditch? *cough*)

Rules: What can I post?

You can comment with your personal headcanon about Harry and Draco. This can be a few lines or a long comment about the H/D ship. It can also be a fic which has your headcanon for how they look/act etc. It can also be a fanart/photo of what your headcanon for how they look like. In both cases please credit the author/artist. Please respect other people's personal headcanon, any flaming or offensive comments will be deleted. It's their interpretation and they are entitled to it. Other than that, any and all headcanon for H/D is welcome here!

The weekly headcanon posts stay open so feel free to catch up on what you've missed so far using the weekly headcanon tag.

Hey guys,

I'm hosting a discussion about the various ways we craft canon oriented characterisations when writing fic. I'd love to hear your thoughts and learn how you go about the process.

Crafting a canon oriented characterisation

(I'm posting it in my lj instead of here because I'm linking to it from a variety of places. I hope that's okay.)

Hi! I have a question about how MAGIC works in Harry Potter's our world.

Specifically, do you need a wand for Occlumency? I know this sort of thing has probably been discussed a lot, but I haven't seen this specific case mentioned before.

The whole idea of wandless magic suggests a wand isn't always necessary for talented witches or wizards (or goblins, house elves etc..), but it also suggests that this is very rare and hard to do. I'm discounting accidental under-age magic, like when Harry blew up Marge.

I can't remember whether Harry uses a wand in his lessons with Snape and I don't have the books to hand to check. I've made a quick poll below; please vote if you are so inclined so we can see if there is a majority one way or the other.

Thanks for reading. Any comments, opinions and votes would be great! ♥

Since I haven't procrastinated in awhile, it's time to play ASK THE F-LIST!  :D  This question occurred to me after Bradley James woke me up at 4am - never mind.  My question is:

How much do you think a wand costs?

This question is bothering me because obviously it's pretty steep.  Ron can't afford a new one when his breaks, plus it was a hand-me-down from his uncle, right?  And yet EVERY student must have one before starting Hogwarts.  So, what happens if they can't afford a wand?  What do Muggle parents do when suddenly faced with "Your child has been accepted to this awesome, amazing school and it will only cost you X,XXX.XX Galleons (whatever those are) to purchase their first wand, robes, books, and if you still have cash, a pet familiar!  Where did Tom Riddle get his first wand?  We know that one was a twin of Harry's.  Did Dumbledore buy it?  Does the school have a fund that will contribute to wand purchase for orphans with no money?  Poor kids whose families can barely put food on the table?

This actually originated from playing with Draco's wand wondering where they would keep their wand.  Seriously, JKR spends NO time on logistics in the series.  Harry keeps his wand in his jeans pocket.  JEANS POCKETS ARE NOT MADE FOR WANDS.  Seriously, TRY IT.  They fall out, you can't sit down properly, and it gets in the way of all movement.  The only way it would work is with a special wand pocket along the thigh, I'm thinking.  I love the idea of forearm holsters, but you have to have really long forearms.  (With my stubby arms it sticks out well into my hand region.)  With teenagers being what they are, and magic being what it is, I'm envisioning them coming up with all sorts of fabulous things to put their wands in.  Shoulder holsters, slings across the back and front, leg holsters, etc.  What do you guys think?  Cosplayers - what do you do with your wands?  Ficcers - what have you come up with for wand carrying?  Frankly, I get annoyed with canon every time I see Harry taking his wand out of his jeans.  My brain gets snarled in logistics for long minutes.  WHERE IN HIS JEANS?  *snickers*  (Not that wand, you pervs.)

WANDS.  TELL ME ABOUT THEM.

If Harry and his friends were Americans discussing realizing they were gay men, they might talk about being attracted to (or being into) guys. Guys is a sort of general purpose informal word for males (teenage or older) here. (Can also include women in "You guys", "these guys" and "those guys".) But they're not American, so - do people use "guys" this way in Britain, or what would they say? I sometimes see "bloke", but that doesn't strike me as something Draco would say - I don't know about Harry.

I usually post these in my own journal, but I figured HEY, WE HAVE A COMM FOR THAT, so I'm asking here, instead.  I recently had an interesting discussion about GHOSTS (do they show up on the Marauder's Map - answer was YES) and obviously I am writing something set at Hogwarts, which brings me to my next question or request for discussion.

LONG BLATHER IS LONG )

There have already been hundreds of spells created by fic writers.  I see no reason why we shouldn't create non-canon school programs.  HELP ME, F-LIST!  YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE!  (Mods, if this sort of thing is disallowed, let me know and I will move it back to my journal.  THANKY!)
