If you don't live in the UK and want to get the "feel" of the Marauders' childhood right, look up a show named "Back in Time for the Weekend" that's currently running Tuesdays on BBC 2. It's available on YouTube in full-length episodes.

It's about a family of four who've agreed to live each past decade since the 1950s for a week, complete with furniture, fashion, food, entertainment, technology and general living conditions. It gets relevant for the Marauders (mainly Lily and Severus, and probably Remus) from the second episode onwards, the 1960s (linked above). #3 is obviously the 70s when they're at Hogwarts, and #4 is the 1980s, when they all left school and Harry was born. More to follow ...

It shows how Lily and Petunia would've grown up in a typical English middle-class family of the time, and the Snapes -- being poor -- might've stayed stuck half, or even a full, decade earlier ... and what they might have aspired to/envied their neighbors for.

It's definitely an interesting resource -- I mean, I was born in the 1950s, and don't remember half of all that stuff, despite having lived through it! And it's a much better, more realistic depiction of how it used to be than whatever version Hollywood cranked out at the time. Mrs Evans (or Eileen Snape, for that matter) sure as hell weren't Doris Day or June Cleaver!

There are also videos on YouTube for Christmas and typical dinners of half a century ago, also under the "back in time" tag. :-)

Enjoy!

Hey guys! I've had a busy few weeks and have neglected my pet, Did You Know? Just a quick note to affirm that I'll be picking up Did You Know? again, so plan on some awesome, interesting, and sometimes surprising canon information!

There is infinite canon material to examine and discuss in Potterverse, and I hope you all will enjoy the topics I toss at you :D While we're on the subject of canon topics for Did You Know?, if you have a specific topic you'd like me to cover, by all means leave a comment to this post or email me at slytherincess[at]gmail[dot]com with any permutation of Did You Know in the subject header.

To tell you the truth, I'm really looking forward to our next topic.

Did You Know? will post to [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers I'd say, realistically, one to three times per week, but sometimes I get on a tear and roll out four or five. It just depends.

This canon h0r greatly looks forward to dissecting Harry Potter canon with all of you!

Today I'm going to do a brief post on disillusionment charms. In my "Did You Know" post on Invisibility Cloaks I touched on the fact that many witches and wizards prefer a disillusionment charm to an Invisibility Cloak. Presumably, a disillusionment charm would be able to be learned by a majority of witches and wizards, can be done by a flick of the wand, and lessen the demand for Invisibility Cloaks (which are very rare and expensive). As well, we find out that Invisibility Cloaks don't stay on very well while flying. || WHAT IS A DISILLUSIONMENT CHARM || )

Why the Sorting Hat considered Harry for Slytherin is -- like the question of whether or not Harry was a Horcrux -- one of the most contentious questions in the Harry Potter fandom. || LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT WHY THE SORTING HAT CONSIDERED HARRY FOR SLYTHERIN || )

This is perhaps one of the most hotly contested topics in Harry Potter fandom:

RUH-ROH!

Seriously -- aren't you surprised that Harry didn't break his glasses eleventy-billion times more than he actually did over the course of seven books? There's a nifty little fix specifically for mending broken glasses in Potterverse: Oculus Reparo. This little spell is quick, easy to learn, and dead on useful. It's the spell Hermione uses on the Hogwarts Express when she, Ron, and Harry first meet. || OCULUS REPARO || )

Now, go polish your glasses!

Polyjuice Potion: J.K. Rowling's gift to kink! Have you written a Polyjuice fic? Tell us about it in the comments.

All humor aside, J.K. Rowling actually put a great deal of thought and research into the ingredients of Polyjuice potion, and each ingredient has its own unique purpose within the potion.

Polyjuice is brewed using the following ingredients: lacewing flies (stewed for 21 days); leeches; powdered Bicorn horn; knotgrass; fluxweed (picked at the full moon); shredded Boomslang skin; and a wee bit of whoever the taker wishes to turn into.

Here's what J.K. Rowling says about Polyjuice: "I remember creating the full list of ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion. Each one was carefully selected. Lacewing flies (the first part of the name suggested an intertwining of binding together of two identities); leeches (to suck the essence out of one and into the other); horn of a Bicorn (the idea of duality); knotgrass (another hint of being tied to another person); fluxweed (the mutability of the body as it changed into another); and [shredded] Boomslang skin (a shedded outer body and a new inner).

The effects of Polyjuice Potion are temporary. Canon suggests that the effects of Polyjuice last only one hour; however, depending on the quality of the brew, one can actually remain Polyjuiced anywhere from ten minutes to twelve hours. Polyjuice is an immensely difficult potion to make. That Hermione managed to brew Polyjuice Potion at the age of twelve confirms her utter brilliance as a witch. A person can change race and sex via Polyjuice, but cannot change species. Polyjuice Potion is only meant for human-to-human transformations.

And there you have it -- all things Polyjuice! Did you know?

Hey fellow [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers! I wanted to take a moment and introduce you to a new series we'll be putting on called Did You Know? Canon Folly Facts, and Fic-Worthy Fun. What this will be is a canon-based tidbit posted to [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers, oh, 3-5 times per week by me, [livejournal.com profile] slytherincesss, your resident canon h0r! Why? It's not unusual for a writer to forget small, but brilliant, canon details that would help enhance their Harry Potter-themed fics, and we want to encourage all you fantastic writers in our community to utilize Potter canon. We're hoping you'll enjoy this information and will also revisit some of the fantastic details that make Potterverse so truly special and magical. Including canon details can really bring authenticity to a fic. Even better, whacky hijiacks can ensue in abundance.

All entries will be from canon -- the seven Potter novels; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Quidditch Through the Ages; The Tales of Beedle the Bard; and Pottermore. You will never find me skulking about the Wikipedia or the HP Wikia looking for information. So, let's carry on with our first installment of Did You Know?

FIZZING WHIZZBEES

Fizzing Whizzbees (UK), or Fizzing Whizbees (US), are a special type of candy found in the wizarding world. Fizzing Whizzbees are a popular sweet sold at Honeyduke's in Hogsmeade; there is no mention of Fizzing Whizzbees being sold on the sweets trolley on the Hogwarts Express or in any other shop. Fizzing Whizzbees are a sherbet-like, ball-shaped candy that causes giddiness and levitation when eaten.

The active ingredient in Fizzing Whizzbees is Billywig stingers. A Billywig is a magical Australian insect with wings on its head and a stinger on its bottom. Muggles do not notice Billywigs; however, when stung, witches and wizards are quickly overcome by a sense of euphoria, well being, and giddiness. It is not unheard of for some witches and wizards to actually try and provoke a Billywig sting to feel its effects. Some witches and wizards are allergic to Billywigs and when stung may become stuck in a state of permanent levitation, which is really quite silly! Did you know?

Who binges on Fizzing Whizzbees? Draco or Harry?
