27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

We welcome your participation! There is no minimum or maximum requirements for your answers -- they can be as long or as short as you'd like. I will include my answer as a comment.

I feel the same way, when there are other people around, I get paranoid! Also, distracted, because I like to people-watch, so when I'm in public I will get caught up in watching others and it's just hard to keep myself in my own head.

When I write somewhere besides my house, I also suffer from paranoia, but I go to great lengths to avoid having to not-write. Like...developing a really intense code partially based off Cyrillic or using a skinny reporters notebook in order to compose TEH SMUTZ without distraction. I tell people that's how I take notes, even though they definitely don't care at all.

So a lot of my writing gets done in my linguistics class.

When I'm at home, I prefer the computer, since no one is there to look over my shoulder and be like, 'is that gay?'

To which the answer is probably yes...

I too suffer from the paranoia that people are reading what I'm typing, so when I'm not at home, I do all my writing in a composition book. Mostly, I write in biochem class or pharmacology because those classes are just too damn boring. At least by writing in those classes, I manage to stay awake and get to write for an hour or two without any interruptions. The one problem is that now I have notebooks full of handwritten work that I just haven't had the time or energy to decipher and type up on my computer. Does anybody else have this problem when they write by hand?

Yes! Me! I write many things that never even approach the keyboard.

When I took creative writing, the professor claimed it was better to write everything by hand because on paper you don't use as many unnecessary words. You just write what you think rather than what looks pretty on the screen. I don't know if I agree because I feel that typing helps me correct mistakes and rethink my sentences, but I can understand his point. I definitely have a problem with my writing being too convoluted and not getting to the point immediately. When I write on paper, I'm less inclined to include lengthy details that are only clutter.

I think the reasoning behind this is true, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's always-applicable advice. Longhand doesn't allow for the same degree of self-editing, but if one struggles with actually getting the words onto the page, then it's probably a good thing.

If you're like me and CAN'T STAND TO HAVE MESSY SCRIBBLE PAGE, then...not so much.

Either way, writing longhand is good for you, because the operative word here is "writing," and it definitely beats sleeping through your pharmacology class.

I adore writing at my desk, in my bedroom. I'm pretty much uncomfortable writing anywhere else. I'm also a Microsoft Word fan, and I find I really can't write as fast or as well if I'm not typing on word. I'm getting better at typing in HTML, but I dislike it because it's harder for me to edit, I guess.

I can outline by stickynotes xD and outlining in a notebook when I'm away from my computer, but I'm trying to do it more now. If I'm away and I'm writing a one-shot, I like to write out scenes on my iPhone. It's easier for me to write on the go.

No, I definitely agree with you. I'm not a fan of the messy scribble either, so I attempt to write in elegant cursive and always fail. It looks more like loopy chicken scratch. I can't imagine how awful I would write with an actual quill.

I'm really impressed that you can write scenes on your iPhone. What app do you use for this? I have issues typing long emails on my iphone...lol. I just hate the auto correct feature; it never seems to learn any of my words properly.

I have autocorrect turned off on mine; It never guesses my words correctly for ANYTHING and I'd rather just upload it and edit SP problems there when I have the time and patience to do it.

I use the Documents2 App, which is really just a bunch of txt files categorized in folders xD The free version is pretty decent for something, well, free! I've heard of other Apps which are probably better, but I'm cheap and it works for me xD

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know the autocorrect could be turned off; I'll have to look into that.

I'm going to search for the app too. I'm with you. I never pay for apps unless I absolutely have to.

I am the exact same. I have my little corner set up with my ashtray and my spot on the couch--ass grove and all--and my side table for my drink, and that is where my writing happens. If there's anyone around, either in the room with me or if I'm out in public, I can scribble a few notes for later but I can't actually write. I think it's because I sort of lose my sense of time and place when I'm immersed in the story and I just don't feel comfortable doing that around others.

Co-signed on the paranoia, too. I likes my privacy, dammit! :)

Probably my bedroom, on my bed. I prefer the quiet of my own room, but sometimes the interaction downstairs can help so either of those! Both hand and computer! And a good thing too because the computer decided to take a vacation this week! Usually I start a story on paper, especially if it's over 2k. Then I usually give up and finish on the computer. I type way faster than I write so usually in the time it takes me to do 2k on paper I could have 5k typed.

In my room at my desk, and always, always on the computer. Writing anything longer than a note by hand and then having to type it up would drive me nuts.
