18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

Muggle Studies just occurred to me when I thought I wanted to write a fic about Draco and Pansy, and I wanted to put them in an amusing situation (taking Muggle Studies against their will). At the time I was writing it, I was also into Harry/Pansy, so the story laid a little foundation for Harry/Pansy, but knowing what I know now, it would have stayed Draco/Pansy. Blankets of Pansies was written for one of mctabby's challenges, I forget which one. A threesomes challenge, where I was given Harry/Pansy with either Draco or Hermione participating. Draco and Hermione both participate, but from under the cover of Petrificuls Totalus. Wick was written because longtimegone requested Parselsmut; it made for a good prequel to Blankets of Pansies. A Thousand Little Deaths was inspired by new canon (on JKR's website) about Theodore Nott, and y'all know I'll ship Pansy with anyone, just about. Heartsease was inspired by Lolita. Ourselves Like We Were Yesterday was inspired by seen_unforeseen and the Zacharias/Pansy ship there. Under the Cold, Wan Moon was inspired by Half-Blood Prince and my interest in the Horcruxes and what year seven would hold for Harry. Strange Darkness Comes Creeping was inspired by its title; I wanted to write a Snape/Pansy fic, and there was nothing about that ship that seemed light or fluffy, so dark fic it was. Benefaction was inspired by George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (which was later turned into My Fair Lady) and was a prompt request. Serpens was inspired by all seven of the HP novels, as it's a retelling of the novels from the Slytherin POV with a Slytherin trio of Draco, Pansy, and Theodore. Adjudication just came to me; I don't recall that it was inspired by anything in particular. Epitaphs, an H/D fic I have yet to put online, is loosely based on the Argentinian HBO show Epitafios. A fic I'm working on called Two Galleon Stallion, a H/D/P sammich, is inspired by the Two Buck Chuck, the $2 bottle of wine from Trader Joe's.

That's like 'where do you get your ideas from?' isn't it? The most accurate answer is 'everywhere'. Newspapers, snippets of conversations, television shows, dreams, the juxtaposition of an insect on the ground with the vague thought of what I'd cook for dinner.

Obviously for fests other people's prompts form the basis of ideas, but even these often need to wait for the spark of inspiration.

In more specific terms? My best ideas come to me in the shower when I have no possible way to record them, and are often gone before I get a chance to write them down. It sucks. A lot.

1) Generally, my mind is so crazy that I get plot bunnies about everything. I once made up a whole original fiction plotline about spies and spy missions. What was the inspiration? raking leaves xD

2) If I can't think of something or if I just want to write something small and less crazy, I write Video!Fics. I go on youtube, watch a bunch of Fanvids, find one I like, message the maker for permission, and I write a oneshot based on the Fanvid's plotline. This way, I don't need to think up actions that make up the plot; just the reasons behind those actions.

3) If I'm really desperate for new ideas, I read old prompt masterlists from old fests and combine a few prompts.

From the world? Everything around me inspires me in one way or another. Sometimes dreams, other times just random thoughts that flow through my head. Though I love the idea of prompts. Such lovely things. :)

Prompts, usually. Sometimes a given pairing/situation/etc will just CLICK in my brain like the right wand for the right wizard. I usually won't sign up for a prompt fest until I've gotten that tingly feeling.

From everywhere! Really! A lot of my ideas are from music, but they've also come from RL events, people, TV... Music is probably the most inspiring though;, even just one line can inspire a whole story for me. Other stories are also a huge inspiration. Sometimes I'll read a certain part of a story and think 'I want to try that'. Usually it's something small like a pairing, or just a certain theme, or even just a small inconsequential scene.

When I used to write Star Wars fic a few years back my biggest inspiration then used to be slvrknight6, who loved SW as much as I did, and loved to encourage me.

I love having prompts to go by, some of them come from various fandom groups while others come from other writers, from songs, from artwork, from pictures, or even quotes or other stories. I like to be inspired by whats around me!! :D
