Fandom Meme: Day 12 - Adaptations
Date: 2011-09-12 07:44 am (UTC)I was struck both with Dovlatov's spare, autobiographical style, and the mystery that is the relationship he depicts. It screamed H/D to me, and I just had to "translate" it into the Potterverse. So out of the story of a Russian dissident emigrating to the US, in my story Harry and Draco are emigrating from an oppressive British wizarding world to St. Petersburg.
The idea of adaptations fascinates me to no end. I have been forever toying with the idea of adapting Ang Lee's movie Lust ... Caution to a sequel of

Date: 2011-09-12 03:50 pm (UTC)This fic is a reworking of "No Night is Too Long", closer in spirit to the film than the book I think. The reason why it is so tempting may vary but for me it was a great release - part homage, part desire to stamp my own identity on both sets of canon, and partly "Yay! I don't have to plot this!" Character moments are much more fun than plot IMO. The best fusion I ever read was in Angel fandom and it was effective because it took a very well-known world and then played around with assigning the Angel characters their roles in the story - sometimes you thought you knew who was who and then it changed right in front of you. Seamless and original, brilliant!
