Date: 2011-09-06 06:54 am (UTC)I think it's interesting, as a woman, to try and write a male character without the male becoming uber feminine. Quite often when I read a fic (and, granted, I don't read a lot of fic these days because i'm too busy writing) it's like reading two women stuck in male bodies (if it's m/m slash). I really don't care for that. I find it really challenging to write purely male males, and I'm sure I don't get it right all the time, because I'm a really emotive person in general and I want to impart emotiveness onto the characters I write. So translating female emotions into male reactions is quite difficult sometimes. I think it's exciting to be able to slip out of one's womanly shell and write from a male POV. A lot of writers are interested in exploring the male characters. There is an emphasis on importing traditionally female characterisitcs to male characters, which is seen as breaking heteronormative gender roles. I find it interesting that so many authors aren't interested in seeing what females with more traditionally male characteristcs, such as assertiveness, powerful careers, physical strength, sexual prowess, and domination.
Anyway, I like to write characters in a variety of roles, regardless of gender. It's fine to write traditional gender roles and it's fine to give the finger to heteronormativity and do some gender role reversal.
I don't feel like I need to get wordier than this. It was really a simple question, wasn't it? Boys or Girls? I could have just said Both, and left it at that!

I think it's a fun challenge to write the opposite gender, no matter how bad you are at it. If you're bad at it, then all the more reason to practice it, right?
Girl characters are easier, being one myself, although it really depends on the personality of the character I'm writing. If I'm writing someone who's totally not like me, it can be more challenging than writing a male character.
