It's really easy to get down about your writing. You read something amazing, then look at your own stuff and think, "I will never be that good." Or you're half way through a scene, and it just won't work.

Well, stop right there. I bet there's something you're good at. It might be dialogue, it might be scene-setting or world-building, or writing smut... The list goes on.

Tell me something you like about your writing. It doesn't have to be earth-shattering, it doesn't have to mean you think you're the best ever at it. Just something you like about your writing, even if you think no one else would even notice. Give yourself some love.

Links or examples totally welcome!

Silly and light-hearted is a total win in my book.

Er, I like to think I'm not bad at snarky banter/dialogue and humor. It's up to others if they agree.
*runs away*

Edit: But clearly my punctuation needs work.

I'd say you're definitely good at the snarky banter/dialogue and humor. Also at the right line to end a drabble!

It is hard! I think it's a great topic though so I will pitch in. I have had lovely feedback about humour and phrasing. I am shocking at punctuation and doing the final edits on a story. I hope it was ok to add some negatives in, but it felt more balanced that way :-)

I think my biggest strength in my writing is dialogue. Yay me! :)

I think I'm good at getting into people's heads, figuring out possible motives and emotions. Because of that, I can make readers understand, feel for, and care about characters they were disinterested in before or even disliked.

(That was hard to actually write down.)

Occasionally I really get the characters 'voice' right! When the dialogue goes just right or the character is portrayed perfectly! Those moments make me smile!

I love my characters. It's the one thing I've always had and the thing I pray will make my fics shine even when plot is weak. But I love how they come out, and I love how much fun it is to get inside their heads and put them down on paper.

Apparently I make people cry a lot. We won't discuss that I'm a bit of a heartless wretch because I might be a little pleased by that, but the moral of the story is that I evidently capture emotion well enough to be believable.

Also, this is really frigging hard to do without being self-deprecating. LOL

Okay, I'll give it a shot... :)

I feel that suspense is a genre that I do well. When I feel down about my writing, I try to remember the pieces I am proud of, and they are always the somewhat darker, more suspenseful ones.

Loving that Emma Watson gif, btw!

Suspense is very hard to do imho! That's awesome that you do it well :D

I'm still relatively new at writing fic, and I think I need a lot more practice, before I'm truly good at it. But I think my stronger points are understated, quirky humour and scene descriptions. My dialogue needs a bit of work, but I like some of it.

I've always been good at writing natural-sounding dialogue. And I'm getting better at descriptions.

I agree 100% with that. The first part, I mean; you're awesome with dialogue. But I don't think you're even slightly weak on description! Your Scorpius in the recent fic is incredibly vivid in my mind.

(It's so hard to resist the temptation to preface this with all the things I'm terrible at...)

I think I'm good at scenes that are romantic without crossing the line into schmoopy. (Though I love me some schmoop when I'm in the mood for that). And I'm pleased with my dialogue sometimes.

I know, I had the same problem. That and the urge to balance everything out with a BUT...as in, I'm good at this BUT I'm crap at that. :\

You truly are good at sweet and lovely romance. And your dialogue is excellent, always. And you write great humor - Al & Scorpius with the hot tub instructions will never ever stop being funny. :D

This is a great idea! Hmm, something I'm good at is dialogue. I'm pretty good at having three people talk and readers can still follow so that makes me happy. :D

Oh another thing I'm good at is romantic things, fluff, and making crack pairings as believable as possible.

Add me to the 'good at dialogue' - so long as it is just between two or three people, hate writing a scene with a crowd. I would like to say that I'm fairly good at portraying the characters without straying too far into the OOC zone, but others might be a better judge of that than I.

I think this is a great post to remind us when we are discouraged that we don't totally suck at everything.

!!!

I know my strength is dialogue, and while it is my favourite part of character development, I think I'm also decent at internal POV - stream of consciousness-style, anyway. But my best example is currently a sekrit so I can't really give a good example XD (because, you know, anything I wrote over a month ago is already "shit shit shit and a large helping of utter crap!" and I can't look at it anymore :D)

Hm, I think the one thing I really love about my writing is the plot ideas I get and the curveballs I throw at my characters during the story. I always get heaps of awesome ideas. But then I guess it's just a matter of exercising those ideas.

I'm new at this, but I'll try.

I think I'm good at conveying emotions, making the readers feel/understand what's going on in the character's head. Mostly tending toward (fl)angst, and especially pining.
