THE ARGUMENT

AN EXERCISE IN POINT OF VIEW

The Argument Clinic with comedians Michael Palin and John Cleese (our own dear Nearly Headless Nick!) of Monty Python's Flying Circus

Go For the Gold contenders, here is your event! Your goal is to re-write an argument between Harry and Draco from Draco's point of view. Note: This is not a tense exercise; that will come later. This is a point-of-view exercise, which should give you practice in seeing an event through the eyes of another character. Because the Harry Potter books are written from Harry's point of view, we always know what Harry is thinking about a given situation -- we know his emotional reaction to the Sectumsempra scene; we know his feelings when he finds out Draco has been made prefect, but Harry was not; we know Harry's fear when he and Ron and Hermione are at Malfoy Manor. But what was Draco thinking? These are just a few examples of what one could take and shape into an alternating point of view -- the point of view from another character.

An important aspect to remember about rewriting an argument is to accurately assess a given character's thoughts and feelings on the subject at hand, whether or not he/she is right or wrong. The goal is to be detatched from your emotional connection to a character and really analyze: What would Character X truly say and do in this situation, based on what we know about him/her from his/her canon?

We encourage you to find your favorite or what you feel is the most compelling argument between Harry and Draco and re-write the argument from Draco's point of view. Your argument may be as long or as short as it needs to be -- we are not measuring word count and you don't need to worry that only a longer piece would be considered acceptable. All entries will be greatly admired with much gusto and enthusiasm! The Sectumsempra scene definitely counts as an argument, as do all H/D duels and Quidditch bitchery.

You can leave your argument exercise here as an answer to this post. If your argument is too long, email it to me at slytherincess[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll make sure it gets up on the comm for everyone to read.
