16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

I like them, but I hate coming up with them! Writing a succinct, yet catchy, summary is really hard. I typically try and outline the basic premise of the fic in one or two sentences, and then include something humorous if at all possible. Sometimes I have very short one or two-liner summaries. For example:

He would die a thousand times with her, but not like this. (Theodore/Pansy)

He looks as forsaken as she feels. (Snape/Pansy)

He does not seek war, but when attacked he knows better how to die than surrender. (Harry/Draco)

Darkness brings home fathers, with their real, unspeakable power. There is more to fathers than meets the eye. (Lucius/Pansy)

Harry Potter finds himself inexplicably drawn to Pansy Parkinson, who demands he request her affections in Parseltongue. Harry does his very best to comply. (Harry/Pansy)

Under a certain death sentence, Draco Malfoy sets out to find Pansy Parkinson the perfect replacement boyfriend. He finds a little something for himself along the way. (Draco/Pansy/Zacharias)

I absolutely despise them! They are one of the hardest things to write for me. The story isn't even as hard as the summary! I try to write two sentences or more to summarize the whole thing...which is very difficult!

Loathe them with a fiery passion. I'm just extraordinarily bad at writing summaries. So much so that at least two of mine landed on some "worst summaries of all time" list.

Hahahaha I was looking at summaries in my fics to try and figure out how I come up with them. The one that jumped out at me was for Tiny and the Beast. They have a similar problem; one is big and one is small. Usually they aren't all that funny. Usually I find a quote or just use a line from the story. I am kinda lazy with summaries.

I hate writing them, but I love their existence. I try to summarize the plot up until the climax (or the first climax, if there's more than one) since I feel that's the point of a summary. Just using a line from the fic doesn't do it for me, because it really doesn't say much about the story. There's so MUCH that can revolve around just one line!

I like them as long as they actually summarize the story. I DESPISE completely unrelated quotes or whatever. As far as writing them, I can usually come up with something, so that part doesn't bother me too much.

I'm not good at writing summaries but I try hard to come up with something cuz I think they are important to let the reader know a little of what happens in the story!! :D
