Hello Writers!
For the month of September I will be posting the 30 day fan fiction meme that's been making the rounds of ElJay to
hd_writers -- that's 30 days of community goodness! Share with us what gets your creative juices flowing and about your personal world of fan fic! Yes, this is an H/D community, but for purposes of this meme, any and all pairings are fine to talk about when answering the questions. Some questions are pairings-specific and others are writing-specific.
01 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
02 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
03 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favourite characters to write?
04 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
05 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
06 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
07 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
08 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
09 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
20 – Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
29 – What is your current project or projects?
30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!
Feel free to copy this meme to your own journal, but I truly hope you'll share your answers here as well. I've been doing this meme for 25 days and it's been great fun and also kind of insightful as to how I write and what my preferences and styles are. So, without further ado, let's get on with it!
01 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
(I will leave my answer to this question as an example in a comment; your answers can be as short or as long as you'd like them to be -- there are no limitations or minimum expectations)
All participation is encouraged and welcome! Happy September, HD Writers ♥

Date: 2011-09-01 09:14 am (UTC)Anyway, I decided I wanted to write a Draco/Pansy story because there were none out there. So I wrote Muggle Studies, wherein Draco loses a duel to George Weasley and has to take Muggle Studies as a consequence; the rest of the Slytherins decide to show their solidarity towards Draco and also sign up for Muggle Studies. It's an unfinished WIP. Someday I ought to go back and re-read it; there was an OFC in Muggle Studies who I liked a lot. She was the daughter of Rodolphus and Bellatrix Lestrange, and was born in Azkaban. I named her Astrid Lestrange and I believe she lived with her Lestrange grandparents (who weren't as batshit as Rodolphus or Bellatrix). She's pretty normal and doesn't have amazing powers and is not unnaturally beautiful, but I'd have to read her again to see if she's a Mary Sue. If anyone's a Mary Sue in Muggle Studies it's Pansy. But, moving on . . . (ETA: Note to
The first and only fandom I've written for is Harry Potter.
I think JKR's way of doing fantasy and magic is what pulled me in. She has a very whimsical style, which appealed to me. I'm not a fantasy reader per se; I just about died from boredom reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy, although The Hobbit was slightly better. Perhaps if I re-read them now I might appreciate them better, as I was around eleven when I first attempted LOTR. JKR was able to introduce fantasy in a thoroughly enjoyable way -- lighthearted, without taking itself so seriously, funny, creative, and lots of room for interpretation for fic writing (this bit came later). The first time I read Sorcerer's Stone I actually didn't continue on with the series. I read it in one shot (in the bathtub, no less) and I thought it was cute, but I didn't really want to know what happened after PS. Then I ended up seeing the movie on repeat for a few days while visiting a friend and her daughter, and that made me want to know what happened in the next book. It was all smooth sailing from there. Also, when I first read some fic, I thought it was canon that had been leaked onto the web (LOLZ, I know) and that made me further intrigued.

Date: 2011-09-01 09:19 am (UTC)I got into writing through reading, like a lot of us, I think. I'd been waiting for OOTP to be released and was on the net searching for spoilers or theories and discovered the fanfic section of mugglenet, and went "Hermione/Draco? Really?" Then discovered Harry/Draco and then discovered Livejournal. There was a Remus/Sirius comm looking for stories about the 1001 places the pups had shagged around Hogwarts, and I wrote a little piece for that and never looked back.
As for what dragged me in? The universe is just so detailed, and back then before the final books came out it was a sea of possibility that we could fill in as we pleased. Draco joins the Order? It wasn't AU, it could still happen. Ron travels back in time and is really Dumbledore? You couldn't prove it wasn't true. Even now, with magic, there's so much that can be done, which is what drew me in and why I'm still here.

Date: 2011-09-01 09:23 am (UTC)I'm with you about LOTR, though. I tried to read it when the movies were released and didn't get the appeal at all. I still haven't seen the third movie.

Date: 2011-09-01 10:28 am (UTC)Coincidentally, I just started the LOTR books yesterday. I'm 100 pages into The Fellowship of the Ring and so far I'm really liking it! Of course I really love the movies, though, and I think that makes a big difference. I was the same way with HP -- I loved the movie before the books. I think there's a huge difference between reading LOTR at 11 and as an adult, as my abstract reasoning is obviously mature at this age. I think I missed a lot of subtleties as a kid. Now it's not the easiest read and some of the exposition is a little tedious . . . we'll see how long I can stick with it.

Date: 2011-09-01 11:24 am (UTC)Hmm... In my sophmore year of high school I became friends with a group of people (quite accidentally) that read manga and watched anime. I had never really encounter anything like that besides Sailor Moon in the 90's, but I don't think that counts because I thought SM was just another cartoon on after school. XD So anywhere, I fell in love with manga right off the bat (Immortal Rain, Gravitation, Bleach, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and FMA to name a few). I remember my friends mentioning ff.net and recommended me to it and from there I was hooked.
As for my first fandom I ever wrote for, that would be Gravitation. I wrote quite angsty little one-shots, also song-fics (written before I ever really knew how passed over they are XD but I still love them) and after that some Bleach chaptered fic (one story and a WIP sequel to my eternal shame... I'll get to it eventually...) which actually, according to ff.net, people are still reading! :D After that, HP came out and even though I was knee deep in anime fics I didn't get into the HP fandom (even after reading the current books) until a few years ago. Silly me! I still hang out in my other fandoms but HP pretty much eats my fangirl life! :D
Anyway, Gravitation. My friends were unashamed slashers and if you don't know, Gravitation is about a 18 year old boy band vocalist meeting ~25 y.o. male romance writer and they meet and then its twu wuv!! With plenty of bumps and potholes along the way. ;)
*squee* I need to read it again!!!
Ahem... I think what drew me in was the novelty of Shuichi (18) and Yuki's (25) relationship. I had never come across gay manga before (O.O waaat...?). The story is captivating (especially book 4 OMG *fangasm*) and the characters really drew me into their lives and I ♥ them so!!! I'm such a sucker for hurt/comfort!! ^///^

Date: 2011-09-01 11:44 am (UTC)I remember quite clearly when I had first come across Draco/Harry. I had never been so shocked in my life. Not disgusted, just shocked. I was quite a sheltered child, innocent, so when I saw it, I had never seen anything like it before. I had never even really thought about male/male before. It didn't help that I lived in a small town and homosexual relationships were non existant, so I was not even aware of it. I remember cautiously reading a story and I was actually very intrigued and I read more and more. I just remember how addicted I became to the drarry stories and after reading 'Magnetic Attraction' by Frizzy, I decided to write my own fanfiction.
I still look back on my original username on fanfiction.net and think 'oh my god, how could you even publish that?' It's quite amusing.

Date: 2011-09-01 12:30 pm (UTC)My first fandom was probably jpop bands and it was a mix of RPG and fics. Harry Potter is really the first fandom where I've written with any dedication.
What I like about writing fics is to further the canon. I like to take parts of a story and twist it a little to create new stories.

Date: 2011-09-01 02:10 pm (UTC)(In case you haven't guessed yet, yes, it was the mother of [almost] all specific media-based fandoms, ST:TOS. *grins*)
Whatever you can say about the early books published in the franchise, I'll always be grateful for one volume -- pretty much just a compilation of fandom-related clubs andd activities, with contact info for the people running the various things. One address brought me half a dozen pen pals (some of which I actually got to meet years later), and another introduced me to fanfiction -- that is, I learned that it existed, that people put it out in mimeographed/xeroxed fanzines, and most importantly where I could get these fanzines. Ordering my first also gave me a flyer for upcoming issues by other people, and the rest is history -- my collection is over 200 strong, even after 30 years, a major cull several years ago and a flooded basement in 2008.
I got into writing myself because the plethora of ideas fertilized my own brain, because I'd played around with creating my own characters and scenarios since I was in my early teens (in a totally unrelated area, with characters created by a still-popular 19th-century German adventure writer), but only in my mind, never writing anything down. Also, Inever really had any ambition or drive to write in German; by the time I discovered ST and fanfiction, my English was good enough to express myself adequately, I wanted to improve my language skills anyway, and off I went. :)
What pulled me into the fandom ... well, I'd been reading science fiction since I was 13, but back then -- we're talking late 1960s here, people! -- there simply weren't any good SF movies or TV series out there. It may look cheesy now (Hell, it did back then, too!), but the impact of suddenly SEEING stories was incredible. Having handsome actors helped, too -- especially when you take the on-screen subtext between the characters into consideration as well. ;-) Yes, there was action/adventure, and MotWs (monsters of the week), but there was always character-driven development, too. Starting out with just one male lead, it quickly turned into two (or three), there was a strong ensemble, and while TOS lacked the cohesive story arcs of modern TV, the show writers actually remembered and referred to things that had happened before -- something unique at the time.
And the fanficcers picked up the ball and ran with it. From action/adventure via hurt/comfort to romance and slash -- Star Trek had it all. Even an AU and time travel were canon! Add into that the sheer scope of a science fiction setting -- the universe as a playground, aliens, space travel, technology that might as well be magic ... what's not to love? Plus, the fans I made contact with and/or met eventually were really nice people. It was worth every cent/penny I spent on postage (pre-internet, remember) and 'zines -- at $20 a pop airmail from the US to Germany definitely not a cheap hobby -- or on my phone bill; I remember one late-night two-hour call to the US that cost roughly $100 in 1983. *sheepish grin*
So yeah, even if I left my first fandom behind, the experiences gained then made getting into my second, later third fandom that much easier.

Date: 2011-09-01 02:21 pm (UTC)What pulled me into HP and has actually kept me here, I think, is all of the variety. I started out in Snarry, and it will always be my one true love of this fandom, no matter how far away from it I stray these days. But there are so many different characters here, and storylines to find. I can look up romance fics and find at least a hundred different takes on how two characters would come together. I can find a lot more of the kinks that I love, and there just seems to be a lot more creativity in the HP fandom than I found anywhere else before now.
I'm still a bit of a fandom whore, because now that I've found a fandom home that I can love and stay in, I do still like to branch out and dabble in others now and then. But HP has a vice grip on my heart at the end of the day, because there's just so much here to enjoy. My childhood into my adult life have all been so focused on the books, and the movies, and then I discovered the fandom. I think that's what I needed to be pulled into fandom, was an initial story that I could really connect to.

Date: 2011-09-01 02:30 pm (UTC)At this point, I've been in Catholic school for nearly ten years, so I was all indignant and grossed out by the entire thing. So together we resolved to write non-yaoi fiction to prove that Kurama and Hiei were JUST really close friends, DUH, and anybody reading into their friendship was misconstruing it. Obviously.
Our first story together involved these Mary Sue characters who fell in love with each of them. We wrote it in a little notebook that got filled up over time--I don't even know where it is right now, so I can't remember much of it, but it was TERRIBLE. We passed it around to friends who all thought it was awesome stuff too, hah. The story mercifully ended, but I found the itch to write did not.
Now I've always had this weird sense of humor. I'll rag on something, say... Twilight, and then do something like "Wouldn't it be funny if I watched the entire series just to make fun of it?" So I would. Or I'd laugh about buying opposing team shirts and before you know it, I somehow have a collection of them. (It's terrible. I essentially actively go out of my way to be that which I mock. IDEK.)
So somehow I said, "Well, if they were going to be gay, Hiei would have to be the girl. Haha, wouldn't that be funny, because it's always Kurama who's the girl in the relationship (look, I was 14. My concept of LGBTs then was very limited, okay?) so what if Hiei got reincarnated as a girl?"
And then I wrote it, by myself this time. My first slash fanfic, masquerading as het.
I think it was just the fact that I really loved that show that encouraged me to write fic for it, but I didn't really write more than those two, I don't think. I didn't write a lot in my early years in fandom, but it helped me get started.

Also lurked for a while and came back in 08/09, if I remember correctly. I honestly don't think this fandom will ever die. :D

Date: 2011-09-01 02:56 pm (UTC)Just a short time later I had another idea hit me while awake late one night. I got up from bed and went straigt to the computer and typed up What a Malfoy Wants. . .. It seemed like after that first experience the bunnies just wouldn't stop. Now I have a file of so many story ideas I don't know if I'll ever get to them and I just keep having more everyday.
The Harry/Draco dynamic is just so completely interesting and intriguing to me. With it being set in a fantasy/magic setting it just couldn't help to pull me in. I adore fantasy elements and good characters get me every time!

Date: 2011-09-01 02:58 pm (UTC)Plus, there was very little clashing of old vs. new fans; a few mutterings of "get off mah lawn", yes, but generally it stayed polite and integrated nicely. (Just DON'T call the Mothership anything but K/S -- none of this "Spirk" or "Kock" *gag* crap! K/S is where the slash comes from, after all!)

Date: 2011-09-02 02:34 am (UTC)It was definitely my passion for Star Wars that first drew me in and my own curiosity! The books never seemed to come fast enough, even these days with one being released almost every other month! Star Wars was something I shared with my dad and so I came to love it because of my connection to him. Now the continuing stories hold my attention even more than the movies did!

Date: 2011-09-02 05:15 pm (UTC)My Twi craze ended abruptly when I discovered HP. My favorite characters, doing the things I wanted them to do; things that JKR couldn't or wouldn't make them do. Just doesn't get any better than that!! After reading a gazillion stories, I decided to try what I've always wanted to do. Writing!! I love being able to take my favs and put them in situations that suit my taste - and the ppl I've met have made a huge difference in how I see myself and my confidence in learning a new task!!

Date: 2011-09-03 06:26 am (UTC)I think what pulled me in about that fandom was my love for the series. I loved Rurouni Kenshin (still do) and I couldn't get different scenarios out of my head. Like Kenshin/Karou, Yahiko/Tsubame, Sano/Saito...XD
Me and my friends were always fans of Harry Potter, but I didn't start writing it until this year. HP fandom used to terrify me to death. I would read, but not write in it. Last year I wrote in it and everyone is very nice. ^^

Date: 2011-09-04 08:49 pm (UTC)The first fanfic I actually read or wrote was for "The Clique" fandom. It was done on forums, where I would write a few lines as a post, people would post responses, and I'd post a few more lines and so on. Some fics I wrote were "chain" fics, where someone would write a paragraph, then I would write a paragraph, then a third person, and so on. It was really a "whoever clicked on the post next writes the next part". The site I wrote on was taken down and I never saved anything, but the experience stuck with me.
The first ship for Harry Potter I had was Harry/Hermione. Hermione was a heroine for me, and the heroine deserves the hero. This was back when the first or second movie came out. I didn't even read the books yet. I'm sure it was before(?) I wrote for "The Clique".
I'm one of those people who, when first exposed to a new story/series, I stick with the hero and hate the evil people, etc. I later go back and decide which characters I actually support. (I remember when I first read Twilight. I loved Bella because you're supposed to. After, when I went back and decided that Bella was a bit...stupid and useless...in my opinion). So I started out supporting Harry/Hermione because they're the "heroes". Somehow, I think Draco broke my rule about support. I never really hated his character and I really thought of him as my own "hero" in a way. After I got over my childish homophobia, I started shipping H/D. That's the only ship I've wrote, edited, and SAVED fics for. Everything else was either drabbles or made up in my head, or posted to forums.
What dragged me into fanfiction was how MUCH you could branch off of the original story. For "The Clique", I really wanted Massie to be stronger than Alicia, and I wanted her to do it MY way. And there's always so many open loopholes where a fanfic can catch hold and branch off to. For Harry Potter, there are even more of these holes and the story has so many layers to it that I get inspired to latch on and keep the story going for me.

Date: 2011-09-05 05:45 pm (UTC)I just love taking characters we know, with all their history, backgrounds, personality and reshaping them and molding them into different stories. It absolutely fantastic! and I am so glad I found it.

A couple of years later I found Harry Potter fiction, and then I found Irresistible Poison and I WAS HOOKED ON H/D. :D

Date: 2011-09-11 06:54 pm (UTC)Actually, if I'm being completely honest, the first fanfic I ever wrote was Star Trek fandom. But that was a very long time ago, grasshopper.
With Harry Potter, I think what pulled me into it was the details and the number of characters that JKR gave us. Also, the fact that most of them were still just kids at the end of the saga (epilogue, shmepilogue) and it gave us a perfect place to begin imagining our own grown-up versions of these characters. You can find canon support for nearly every permutation of pairings and grown-up!characters, by interpreting how they might have internalised canon events and had that inform their adulthood. Endless possibilities! It's brilliant. With other fandoms, the characters are adults already, and it's harder to find canon support for a different version or imagining of a major character.
