“When someone is mean to me, I just make them a victim in my next book.”
― Mary Higgins Clark
We draw our inspirations from the world around us. The people you write about aren't just in your head; they may have bits and pieces of personality from friends, family, enemies, even that dude you saw on the street just this morning while having coffee. When they say "write what you know" they don't mean write a story about someone who goes to school like you do, or works like you do. What they mean is twofold.
One: You live in the world, and that world inspires you. Take pieces of it into your work and twist it around until it becomes something new and different. Mash pieces together, tear pieces apart, but use your world.
Two: Research! If you don't know something before you write it, then learn. It takes time, yes, and doesn't need to be done today. Right now, if there's something in your story that needs more detail, you can just put "[INSERT DETAILED SCENE ABOUT FIRING A BOW HERE]" then go off and FIRE a bow or at least do extensive research, then come back and add in the description later. Write what you know doesn't mean to limit yourself, it means to expand your knowledge.
While you're here, check in below and let us know how you did yesterday with your writing, and how you're doing overall! Whether you're ahead or behind, remember, ALL WORDS ARE AWESOME WORDS and just by writing you are making progress. Need some encouragement or cheerleading or just a place to vent your frustrations? Let us know!
