Ever been to the movies and thought to yourself that it was great fun to watch but was lacking something? I'm thinking of those movies that roll from explosion to explosion without much conversation or story in between. While tension is important to any story (as we've already discussed), you also need the story arc and the tiny resolutions along the way to keep the plot moving. Let us see how people change in reaction to the pretty special effects. And even more importantly, give the pretty things a reason to exist, even if you don't let the reader know until after the explosion is fading away.
