I like angst or flangst. I can be a really dark person (in personality) if I want to be, and sometimes that leaks into my writing. In all of my fics, even something meant to be pure fluff, ends up with a scene of pure angst and tears. I like happy endings, however, so it usually results in fluff again.

"Flangst" is a combination word (is that what they're called?) of "Fluff" + "Angst". And I know what you mean about Dark ~ I'm exactly like that too :)

It does sound that way, doesn't it xD

I think it's usually written as a pure fluff fic where the climax of the story is pure angst...if that makes sense?

I think it's a pushing of the emo-buttons to elicit gut responses from the readers. Not so much decent plotting or setting or attantion paid to all the other aspects of storytelling, as it is a lens on the emotions of the pairing involved. For instance, if I'm writing Draco POV and it concentrates on his feelings for Harry to the exclusion of all else (that seems to result in UST/yearning/atmosphere of unrequited for me), then there's an element of angst involved, as (again, personally) I think people are ultimately alone in their heads and one never knows or is certain of just how much or how deeply the object of one's affections reciprocates. But I love happy endings, so...the angst usually resolves to that, at the close.

Does BDSM count as a genre? Because I'm very fond of that, to be honest! But if that doesn't count, I suppose romance is what I tend to gravitate towards. Although, my lovely lorca is getting me in a serious hurt/comfort mode with some of our co-writes.

[identity profile] deirdre-aithne.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I was kidding, although I do sort of think it could be a genre all its own. But I really have to disagree that BDSM falls into dark!fic when it's hardcore.

[identity profile] deirdre-aithne.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It can definitely be included as part of a dark!fic, yeah. But it's all about what's behind the actions, and that's true of really any kink.

Sort of like you could have two identical, really loving, romantic scenes, but if one of them turns out to be a sort of Stockholm Syndrome, mindfuck scenario, that would fall into dark!fic, where the other wouldn't. It's not the kink itself that makes it dark!fic or romance, it's the context of the kink. Even hardcore degradation and D/s can be romantic, if that's the way two people want things to be. But that same behaviour can be dark!fic if it's non-consensual or done in an attempt to abuse someone rather than show affection for them. So yeah... context. ;) It's all about the context.

Angst, family problems, teen pregnancy, mpreg...all things that I have gone through in real life usually. Except for the mpreg obviously :D

[identity profile] crazyparakiss.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Also ROMANCE. I forgot that one, how could I?!

[identity profile] crazyparakiss.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I had a baby when I was sixteen. Usually I make them more dramatic than my pregnancy was, but I do personally understand the stigma. My 'baby-daddy' and I have been together eight years and have another child together, but when people meet me and find out I had a baby at sixteen they automatically assume that my girls have different dads. No, they don't.

Yeah they do. Jerks. Oh well, what can ya do? I just ignore them and enjoy my life. :) *hugs*

I write mostly H/C - as I mentioned in an earlier post, nearly all my characters wind up broken in some way, whether I intended them to or not - but I've dabbled in crack, humour, angst, flangst, dark!fic, romance, tragedy... I even played with epistolary in my HP_porninthesun fic, and I really liked it!

Although I don't consider content part of the genre, per se, I do write a LOT of BDSM, D/s, slash, threesomes, PTSD, etc.

I seem to be wired for cuteness, fluff, romance, and smut. Whenever I try to write something dramatic things are resolved at the end. The same with angst, flangst, and my attempts at darkness. Whenever I write dark I have to end it with a light tone or something that will ensue happiness at the end. I write hurt/comfort, romance, het, slash, and light D/s themes. Crossdressing, threesomes, and mpreg is something new I tried in recent fests and enjoyed it. ^^

I tend to write angst, romance, and PWP most often. But I have written at least one story in each genre, and they're all particularly fun in their own respects! I think I prefer most angst, because it seems more real to me... whereas a story with just romance and PWP don't have any of the nasty bits of life.

I do best when I write tension. Angst, hurt/comfort, etc. I've written small fluffy fics, but I can't find the balance between tolerable fluff and cavity-inducing fluff. :-)

My stories tend to be very smutty but I like to think I add a bit of romance to them all... i also love to write angst and lots of kink.
